Why Error 99 with this camera w/ lens included?

I am trying to buy a digital SLR and looked at the review for this camera. The one without a lens has 5 stars from everybody but the one with the lens so may comments with "Error 99" . Is there a problem with Canon lens 18-55mm?

It was probably dirty contacts. It can do it with third party lenses, but usually it's something a simply scrape with a pencil eraser can cure.

The comments I read did not seem with the third party lenses or being dirty. Many of them indicated that it was a brand new lens that came with the camera. It makes me nervous about buying it.

I found a good error 99 post on a blog which gets into it pretty good and shows how to isolate the error .... worth checking out. Other sites I have read boil it down to two causes, third party lens compatibility and dirty contacts. There is also the possibility of low battery power causing the issue. But I haven't come across it being attributable to the Canon lens itself. Can you share a few links?

Thank you for giving me the site that discuss Error 99. It sounds to me there is some issue with Canon firmware or something. I will ask Canon if they have done anything about it. If not I will ask them to read these comments.

Unfourtanently this is nto a firmware problem it's one of four things.

1. Camera was dropped.
2. Third party attachment.
3. Bad cf card.
4. Dirty contacts.
