How fast is this camera?!

( - 6/16/06)

I've only owned this camera for a few days so far so if my opinions change as time goes by, I'll pop back here and will post a revised opinion. I bought this camera to allow me to 'retire' my old well used 10D. I COULD have stretched to the 1Ds MKII had I wanted but I bought the MKII N instead, for several reasons. Firstly, I didn't want to have to go out and buy all new glass to prevent the lenses I have letting the photos down. I have mid and high range lenses but have been told that the mid range lenses would be almost unusable given the full-frame format of the 1Ds. Also, I take a lot of sport photographs and for me 8.5fps is simply outstanding! No more missed shots! This camera is lovely to use, fast to focus (no focussing problems here!) and easy to shoot with. On the downside, the menus are a little clunky because Canon have omitted the "SET" button which features on the 10D in the middle of the rear jog dial. On the 10D, you simply spin the wheel and once you've highlighted the option you're looking for, you press SET. On the MKII, you have to hold either "MENU" or "SELECT" and THEN spin the wheel. Once you have highlighted the option you're looking for, you release the "MENU" or "SELECT" button. I'm sure I'll get used to it soon, but on first impressions, the 10D's menus are far easier to navigate. Additionally, the viewfinder - whilst beautifully clear and large - has a slight colour-cast to it. Perhaps some kind of anti reflective or UV coating, I'm not sure. It doesn't take long to get used to it, but it's there and the 10D doesn't have it. The last thing I would mark this camera down on is how loud the shutter is. I realise that it has to be fast to be able to shoot at up to 1/8000sec but it's still incredibly noisy compared to any of the other Canons I've used - especially the whisper-quiet 300D and 350D. Still - it's a big-boys camera so who cares!? All in all, this is another superb camera from Canon and a welcome addition to my fleet!
