Best sports camera

(Don MacMullin - 12/14/06)

This is the very best camera for sports/action photography on the market, IMHO. I tried everything I could to not pay this kind of money. I added a battery grip to my 30D. I purchased better lenses ('L' Series). You name it I did it. But in the end, the speed of the Mark II N just became something I needed because of the main sport I shoot this time of year. It is fast and that burst rate is incredible. I shoot sports and I always arrive at new arenas early to check the light and adjust my settings and then save them for future use as starting points, so exposure hasn't been an issue. I have yet to have any focus problems and I have used this camera at 5 games so far and have shot about 1700 pictures, that's a little overkill for me but I wanted to put it to the test. I suggest that owners of this camera make sure they really understand the AF Mode, point selection (manual and auto), point activation and the use of lens extenders if you want to avoid some headaches. Most all my shots have been sharp and clear out of the camera and the ones that were not (very few) were never beyond repair in Photoshop. Other thing I like, the ability to use 2 different type memory cards at the same time, (CF and SD), the solid construction, it is a tank and being able to use the camera with th DC Coupling Kit.
There are some cons, like weight (only for setup and breakdown as I shoot on a monopod) it is heavy, especially with the lenses I use, and the learning curve is much longer then any other cameras I've had. I bragged about how quickly I got the 30D down but this camera is a challenge. I've spent a lot of time with the manual and I've actually had to take notes to remember some important things.
The setup I'm using is the Mark II N with a 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM on a monopod and I'm getting real good results. As long as I continue to get good results, I will never regret this purchase.
I would only reccomend this camera to serious enthusiasts or pros who shoot sports/wildlife/outdoors/action.
