This is a problem that seems to occasionally occur in the Canon EOS 20D. Err 99 is a system error. This error occurs when there is an internal malfunction found while the camera preforms its self-checking procedure, which happens before taking every picture.

To temporarily solve this problem I suggest turning the camera off then back on again. I am sure you have probably tried this, but if it is a contiuning problem as it sounds like it is I would suggest you take Canon up on that warranty. I could find no simple way to fix it yourself and you get it taken care of before that warranty runs out.

Try upgrading your firmware before you send it back. I used to get the err99 but after upgrading I haven't had the error.

I have this problem only with my older Tamron 24-135, every other lens I've tried works without fail. It was suggested to me that I contact Tamron about a possible chip upgrade, I'm going to look into it, but I've also found a discussion on the ERROR 99, the "update 2" may solve or at least help other to determ the exact problem.

its happening to my canon 20d also.. i have had the body for a few years now and it started doing it about 4 months ago.. it is intermittent and just seems to do it when its having a bad day... i do know that the little round battery in my cam is about done for sure so i will change that today and let you know if it fixed it..
i did update the firmware and it fixed the problem only temp.. yesterday in the middle of a shoot it did it again and it was worse.. so becasue this only happens intermittently and sometimes the cam shoots fine and then the error comes up again and seems to have gotten worse to worse.. i think it must be the battery (little memory battery)
i took the little battery out and tried the camera and the problem was there and constant.. so i have my fingers crossed ..

I just read somewhere that someone cleaned the lens contacts with and eraser and the problem was solved.

check your lense. i updated my firmware and that did not fix the error. changed lenses and after some extensive testing i can sadly say that my lense is the issue. but after 5 years that was a bit to be expected
