Canon 20D LCD malfunction

Recently my Canon 20D's LCD went blank while shooting and will not playback images or show the menu. I removed and reinserted the battery and still no luck. It still takes images ok as I checked the compact flash disc on my other camera, a 10D. The LCD does not work when I press the view button. I've tried different cards and batteries. The camera is only 15 months old. Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting the camera? Sometimes firmware can get corrupted and must be reset back to defaults. I also recommend that you see if there's a firmware update which may have been released since you bought the camera.

You may want to check with Canon to see if this model is a part of the CCD Service advisory. Although it's not mentioned in the advisory, it sounds very familiar to what those are suffering from. As such, Canon is repairing them regardless of warranty being in force or not.

I'm not guaranteeing this will be apart of it, but it may be since the list is only as of Oct 2006.

I did try resetting the camera, no luck. I also have the latest firmware updates. My camera is the 20D and is not listed in the advisory but I suspect this is a wiring problem. I will email Canon to find out more info.

It's certainly worth a try. Be advised, however, that if it's out of warranty, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. The rule of thumb is that if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model. also if they wont' repair it because the warranty is expired, you may consider checking with your credit card company (if you paid for it that way), often credit card companies offer a feature where the warranty is extended as a benefit of being a card holder.

I certainly wouldn't lollygag on it, however, as this camera is on 3 years old now, you may be the tail end of that as well. But check it out.

I took it to a local camera shop. The shutter release switch was bad, part = $12 plus labor $140 and I gto it back in a week.
