I need to use my 20D to shoot my high school age daugter's dance team. Usually far away and dark.

Which would be my best lense choice for whole team photos and closeups?

Since you want both far away and dark as well as close-up, it would have to be a good general all-around lens. Your other option is to purchase two- one for the faraway stuff and one for the general close-ups etc.

The Tamron 70-300mm lens might be a good choice for you depending on the exact conditions.
