What would be the best budget DSLR for me?

Megapixels are not much of an issue, although I do want 6+. My budget is under $500 (and that includes a lens). I am willing to get older/used models off eBay. The brand is not important, although I do prefer Canon and Nikon. I want ease of use, excellent higher ISO performance, and a good viewfinder. I have been considering the Nikon D40, but the 3 point AF seems a bit too simple. I have also considered the Canon XT (not XTi), but it seems from what I've heard, the viewfinder isn't great, the build quality isn't great, and it doesn't have a spot meter.
I also want a camera that can show your current settings (shutter speed, aperture) in the viewfinder.

Thomas,

All of the cameras should show the settings in the viewfinder (I know the Canons do). I would look for a Canon 20D used online in your price range. It will address the build issues you're worried about, and you should be able to find one in decent shape for what you want to pay. Good luck and happy shooting.
