It is time for me to upgrade but I am unsure what to do.

I am currently shooting with the Rebel XT but in the past year my favorite pass-time has become a part -time job. I need a camera up-grade that will meet my demands. I shot film with a canon and my first digital was a canon so I am not sure if I want to go witha new brand or not. My question is what would be a good up grade for me and the growth of my business. I started out with just portraits but it has developed into weddings and just like most flowers and landscapes shots are my stress release. I have looked at the 30D, XTI, and 5D. i am not sure what to do and the 5D is a "pretty penny". Any help would be great.

Amber,

I shoot weddings as well and have been able to maintain good shots with the Rebel XT. If you want to upgrade and save on money, the Rebel XTi might be a good way to go. Another way to save is to look for a used Canon 20D on eBay. It won't have a warranty, but you'll love the versatility.

Most people who choose the Canon EOS 30D over the Rebel XTI do so because of higher image quality, more creative control, a more solid body and grip, and faster operation. If the price of the 30D doesn't scare you off, I would absolutely choose it over the Rebel provided you know how to use it. If on the other hand you tend to stick to the kit lens and want something a little simpler, the Rebel should work... but the 30D is just better in the image quality dept. and if you're a pro it's really what I would lean towards.

As for the 5D- yes it's gorgeous, yes it's expensive, and it's also got a bigger sensor with less pixels 'crowded' onto it. It's a better camera. But it may not be what you need particularly if you can't afford it.

Here are some image tests that might help you decide, pay special attention to the low light shots:

Another way to save is to look for a used Canon 20D on eBay. They are very fast and have very clear and crisp shots. It won't have a warranty, but you'll love the versatility.
