I have the Canon 30D and I want great portrait body shots, using the 28-135mm what is the best setting

I would like members to tell me exactly what to do for inside shooting around 5PM Est under florecent type lighting, the staircase is flowing circular with yellow and white background. Please tell me the exact setting for great full-body shots, the close up shots are easy to get but having problems with shooting the whole body...

Is the issue that you can not fit everyone into the image of that it is hard to get even lighting on everyone? I would say being as wide as possible (unzoomed at 28mm) with the brightest light source not directed harshly at the yellow and while background. I would said it to One Shot focus and let the white balance auto, unless the florescent light are giving off too much of green, ugly light. Experiment a bit, it is the only way to really get better.
