The settings of my nikon d40x keep on getting disturbed even in the full auto mode

I have just bought a new Nikon D40x camera with a 18-55 mm lense, but just after a few days it has started acting weird. In auto mode the flash wont pop even if it is required and in manual mode if i use the flash , it bursts the picture. When I contacted the dealer, his technician did something and the settings were all restored and camera started working fine but return to its normal weird status after a few days. The technician told me that I have changed the auto settings which in turn are causing the problem but I even tried fixing it up by pushing the restore factory settings button on the side of the camera but it didn't help. Please, anybody help. Is there any other mean by which i can restore my camera's factory setting or is there some manufacturing defect in my camera?

The firmware sounds like it's corrupted to me. You may want to see if Nikon has an update on their website. Or, what I'd do is simply return it and get another one as it could just be a defective unit. It can happen.

If the technician can restore it, then it is unlikely that the camera is faulty.

What you can do is to repeat the steps taken by the technician, which probably is as follows :
Turn the camera on, leave the mode dial at Auto if you do not want to change it, and press the ' info ' button with the index finger of your right hand.

The LCD will light up showing all the functions that you can control for shooting mode.
Press the zoom button at the bottom left corner of the LCD and you can now change the Flash setting.

Look for the box with a ' lightning 'sign at the bottom left corner. It should be lighted up, otherwise use the directional button to select it. Press OK.

This leads to the next screen showing 3 options :
Auto, Red Eye reduction, Flash off.
Select Auto and press OK.

Press the Info button or wait a few seconds, the lighted screen will close and you can take pictures with the flash popping up automatically in dim light, provided, of course, that the camera is not faulty.
