I'm looking to add another lense to my 30D. I'd like a telephoto lense or one in the IS line, can you suggest something along those?

I need a telephoto lense for sure. I like to shoot subjects that are farther away, but want to get close up photos, such as an animal at a zoo... as well as, I'm very interested in shooting people at party's where possibly a wide angel lense could make a good choice... I love taking photos of family member's, posing them to take family style portraits and close-ups... What lense or lenses could you suggest? I just read a little about the IS line, giving a little more stability to my shots, so they won't be blurry, etc...

I was looking at the EF24-105mm lense, as well as the EF-S 17-85mm lense..... advice on either of these as a compliment to my 30D? I appreciate any responses and or any other suggestion's you might have... and I thank you very much beforehand!! :)

What other lenses do you have for the 30D? Either would work fine for portraits and group shots. However, the 24-105mm is faster. I'd also take a look at variants from Sigma and Tamron which Popular Photography has called good lenses for the money and some are downright comparable to Canon according to Photography Mag.
