Well that's the beauty of BULB. It stays open as long as you depress the shutter. There is no real time limit. It closes when you release the shutter button. There are some shutter controllers that allow you to set times (Model TC-80N3 is one). They're good for astrophotography.

Like I said, it's a manual function. To do it automatically, you need to get the optional shutter controller that will allow you to preset the time.

Pankaj, you can't preset a bulb setting that I know of. It's purely manual. The only way you can is to get the optional shutter controller which will trigger the shutter to open, and then trigger it to close after the preset time has expired. I can't put it any plainer. good luck.

Well the 40D will certainly do the trick. So will the XTi Digital Rebel (400D). Also recommend the Nikon D40 or D80 (could they make that any more confusing?) You'll probably need a T mount to connect it to your telescope.

The 40D has a long exposure setting of 30 seconds. That is the max you can use without going to the bulb setting or buying one of the add-on timed shutter releases. The Canon Model TC-80N3 will allow an exposure for 99 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds.

Pankaj,

OLympus DSLR's will do this as well, up to 30 seconds.

Best wishes with your choice.

According to Canon, the limitation in the bulb length would be the batteries. The camera is continuously on during an exposure. They claim (here: http://www.usa.canon.com/uploadedimages/FCK/Image/White%20Papers/EOS_40D_WP.pdf) that with a fully-charged Battery Pack BP-511A, a bulb exposure can be as long as about 2.5 hours.
