I'm having trouble getting clear soccer action shots at night with my 40D and 100-400 lens, using ISO 1600...any suggestions?

I take wonderful action photos during the day, but am having trouble with blurring in the night photos... I'm not a professional, but take tons of actions photos, just can't seem to figure out night time action shots. I've tried adjusting the ISO and white balance...not sure what else to do...I haven't been using a flash because I think I am too far from the subject matter...mostly using my zoom at 400.

What you may want to do is run in shutter priority mode. This will allow you to set the shutter speed as fast as you need, while the camera chooses the aperture. And obviously, the faster the lens, the better. Pan with your subject. Pre-focus (press shutter halfway down to focus) then if the focus changes, refocus. Experiment with the sports mode. And set your white balance for the bright lights. And experiment. I'd also try bracketing, this is where your camera goes -1, 0, +1 on the aperture.
