I really want to make the best choice in a multi-purpose lens for the Canon 50D. While I can add lenses later, for frugality sake I would like a good

I take mostly natural people living life shots (a fair amount of still shots, some architectural & scenery). I want to buy an all-around good lens to start with that will provied excellent clarity and sharp images and not frustrate me in not meeting my needs (like ample light to reach a zoomed in image and a wide enough angle for a group image and good speed). It needs to be user friendly. I have previously owned the xti (and was frustrated with poor light in 300 zoom photos even with the added speedlight flash. Later I can add lenses, but need to be frugal up front in the initial purchase.

For a good basic portrait lens, the 18-55mm is a good frugal place to start. And you don't have to buy Canon, although there's nothing better. SIGMA is making some kickass glass these days to the point where Photography Magazine has recommended them over the actual Canon glass. I disagree with that, but as a value vs. quality consideration, Sigma is an excellent alternative if on a budget.
