is there any way to turn the sound from the shutter button off?

i need to be able to shoot a wedding inside a church while making as little noise as possible. my client has requested no flash, and the sound from the shutter be turned off. is there anyway to do this with the 5d? i also own a canon digital rebel and wondered if there was a way to turn it off on that camera as well.

Thanks!

It's not a sound being played back, the reason that it makes a shutter sound is because it has a shutter. As in a mechanical shutter that has to open and close. Same thing with the digital rebel, that's the point of using SLR cameras. They have a reflex mirror and a mechanical shutter.

The new Canon 1D MkIII has a custom function that makes it nearly silent. It more slowly resets the mirror so you don't get the typical loud mirror slap.

You said shutter "button", hmmm... Is it possible you are talking about the beep that happens when you press the shutter button and when it locks focus? If so, you can easily turn off the beep in the custom functions menu, cuts down the noise bigtime. I turned mine off a long time ago, it bothers me and really annoys others, especially in churches as you mention. On the Rebel it's in the "Camera" menu section, near the White-Balance bracketing settings.

But the actual shutter itself is-what-it-is. It's quieter on the 5D than on any of the Rebels or the 20D & 30D. The new 40D has a MUCH quicker shutter that's not as loud, but it's still very noticable.

I need to shoot a live tv interview with my Canon 5D. They've asked for he shutter to be silenced also. yikes. The only thing I can find online is some clumsy big box thingee thats lined with foam. I think not.
You would think they would have invented something for this issue by now. Seems we are all looking for a solution.

That clumsy big box would be called a 'barney'. They used them in the old movie days to make the movie camera quieter.

what the hell do you mean "turn the shutter sound off" its a shutter! A mirror has to flip up and a shutter open, then the shutter has to close and the mirror has to flip back down. this is a mechanical process called PHOTOGRAPHY the sound is not a recorded file that is played back when you presst he shutter like in a camera phone. Seriously if you have to ask this question you shouldnt be a photographer!

Its like saying "is there anyway to stop the sound of an atomic bomb when it detonates to make it more quiet"!
