What does the term "live view" mean?

I have been researching digital SLR camers with the intention of buying one. I ran across the term "live view" in a review of the Sony DSLR A700. It stated that the Sony did not have "live view" but some other high end cameras did. What exactly is "live view"? How does a camera with "live view" perform differently than a camera without "live view"?

Live view is optical (the image is displayed thru the glass) while the other option is to display the image digitally, either with the large LCD on the rear of a camera, or on a tiny LCD in the viewfinder.
