How's the Canon vs Sony?

New to the board, but need any and all advice. Recently purchased the Sony T170 CyberShot for my daughter, hubby made a mistake in ordering and got the Sony T700 for me. I am really mourning the loss of the view finder. He is willing to let me get another camera (and hopefully sell the T700 ourselves, if that's the way it turns out), so I've been reading all the reviews. Not pleased that there is a lot of comments about the "noise" associated with the Sony's, but also not happy with the few comments on the A10000 about red eye with flash. Guess you just can't take indoor shots with these point and shoots with much quality (unless you use a tripod). This strikes me as a knowlegable board. Any comments you could give me between the two will be much appreciated.

I think you would be happy with either brand. I had a Sony DSC-W5 and currently use a DSC-W170. I have both and they still work. The W5 has been dropped several times over the past 4 years but, everything still works fine. I guess Sony's build quality really keeps me a loyal customer. Image wise, you will see noise with most 10MP compact point & shoot cameras. All the manufacturers are cramming lots of pixels onto a small CCD (compared to a DSLR). Same thing goes with the red eye. Compact cameras have the flash close to the lens of the camera, creating red eye. To fix this problem, some cameras can fix red eye in camera. I've found it to work quite well on my W170.

Both cameras feature optical image stabilization which allows you to use a lower ISO, reducing noise without using a tripod. I also noticed the LCD on the Sony is of much better quality, 115k pixels on the Canon A1000 and 921k pixels on the T700. Then, you get 4GB of internal memory on the T700. Compared to the Canon A1000, I would keep the T700. The A1000 is plastic while the T700 is metal, so it holds up better.
