Noise to a digital camera, was what grain was to a film camera. And it asserts itself into images in low light situations and at higher ISO settings. And it's a common problem with point and shoot cameras which are stuffed with more and more megapixels without a corresponding increase in chip size. The result is a chip that is less sensitive to light, not more. Additionally, with 99% of pictures taken snapshots (if they are printed at all), MP above 6-8MP won't even seen until photo sizes get above 8x10. So the "more MP is better" myth is just that ... a myth.
The SD1100IS is better rated than the A2K. It's also smaller. My recommendation is go with the SD1100IS. However, for comparison, you may want to check out this resource. It takes pictures with each and you can compare them side by side.
