Internal Memory and Memory Cards

I have larger memory cards on order but in the mean time I've noticed that where the small card that came with the camera used to take 11 shots now it will take no more than four pictures..Also is there an internal memory on this camera? I assumed there was and that it would take over when Memory Cards were full but all that happens is that I get the message 'memory card full'. If the memory cards is taken out the camera will not switch on.
Another minor point. My camera does not make the noises it should do according to the manual.
Thanks in advance.

It used to be that all cameras have a basic internal memory. It varies on the model but it usually only allows you to take a few pictures, depending on the quality setting yo use. And no, the internal memory doesn't take over when the card is full. The memory card actually overrides the internal memory.

If the camera won't turn on without the memory card in, that may be an issue. Try hitting the reset function. Otherwise, you may be looking at a service call to Canon.

However, there's no mention of an internal memory on this model in the specs, so this may be a new design which took out the internal memory in favor of total reliance on the SD card memory slot. It makes sense, I guess.

As for your memory card, just reformat it. It'll be back to it's max use in no time.

Thanks James,
As a recent convert from Film I'm a bit of a dummy...Anyway I've followed you advice and all is now well..I've even got the sound back on..I'd been examining the options without quite realising what they were and had pressed a few wrong buttons.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Victor. And just remember, whatever happens, it's always a "reset" away from fixing.
