best setting for copying documents

1. What are the best settings to use on a Canon A530 for copying documents?

2. I have a copy stand and assume shaded daylight is best, or I have two pretty good floodlights.

Thank you, but I was more interested in the settings on the mode dial, or funct. set or menu. I don't know how to get the settings you referred me to by adjusting the dials and buttons on the camera.

It depends on your lights what white balance to set the camera to. But under your settings look for a setting to add higher contrast. Especially when you are shooting documents you want the text to show up well. Of course you will probably end up doing at least a little bit of adjustment on the computer. Mostly to correct colour, and contrast. Another alternative would be to scan the documents. If you don't have your own scanner you can probably find a friends who does have one, or if you are only just making a few copies it is fairly inexpensive to have them copied at a store.

Your main issue is going to be less to do with the light and more to do with the focus. I would recommend Macro to ensure good close-up focus, but if you get that close the whole doc won't fit in the picture. I would turn off the flash and use really any setting (auto is fine) and just experiment with distance from the doc, pressing the shutter button halfway to try and lock a good focus on the text.

One other thing I just thought about while reading some of the other answers is that you probably would want to use a but of the zoom and move the camera a little further away from the document. If you take the photos with your zoom at full wide angle it may cause some distortion where the edge of a straight paper may look slightly curved. So I'd suggest zooming in a bit.
