Hello,

I'll hazard a guess here and say that your problem is probably that you're using AA alkaline disposables where you should be using AA NiMH rechargeables. Using rechargeable batteries will not only give you longer battery life, it will also save you money in the long run, as rechargeables can generally be used through up to 1000 charge/discharge cycles. You can find AA NiMH batteries at several retailers around the internet, as well as your local electronics store or department store chain. They come rated by their capacity (in units called mAh). The highest capacity currently widely available for AAs is 2700mAh. These should give you a much longer-lasting charge.

I hope this helps!

Are you using regular batteries? If so, I recommend changing to rechargeables immediately if not sooner. Using flash and zoom etc., you will run out quickly- and there's no telling how long those batteries were on the shelf either, I once bought three packs of regular batteries and got a total of about 30 photos out of them because they just kept dying. I then bought rechargeables (I have a Canon Powershot A series, too) and have not had to charge them for two months. Helps immensely.

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:
