Even with fully charged batteries for my A540 the low-battery indicator flashes. Why is that?

The batteries I currently have are Duracell 1800 mAh.

I think you should be using a minimum of 2200 mAh batteries, especially if they're rechargeable. If I were you, I'd invest in some 2500 mAh. That should solve all your problems. With a camera that only uses 2 AA batteries, the amount of charge they hold is really important. I'd consider Rayovac or Sony, they seem to do really well with digital cameras.

Also, some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:

I had my A540 for almost a year. I tried disposable batteries, Energizer rechargeables and Duracell rechargeables. None would hold a charge in the camera!!! And yes, they were top rated batteries. It was sent back to Canon twice for "repairs" because it would not take more than 6-12 pictures before the batteries died. I finally sent the camera and all it's accessories back to Canon's corporate offices in New York with a note saying I did not want this camera back. I believe the problem is a product flaw and also that while most A540s are probably fine, some A540s are lemons, and mine was one of the latter.
