My A540 lens cover hangs up. How can I fix it?

Then lens cover barely opens a crack EVERY TIME I turn the camera on to photo. No visible dirt or dust. Never exposed to harsh conditions. Began shortly after camera acquisition. Must touch or manually push open cover leaves to use. Lens cover seems to close completely by itself each time it is turned off. Extremely irritating, inconvenient and wrong.

Well just because you don't see dust/dirt doesn't mean it isn't there. Try some canned air. Also reset your camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset," or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to Canon's website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

I spent quite a long time looking through the onscreen menu without success trying to find the "reset" or "reboot" option. A separate Internet search instructed me to hold down the menu key for 5 seconds.

So far, your suggestion seems to have solved the problem completely. I guess time will tell if it is a permanently fix, but the lens cover seems to work beautifully now.

THANK YOU very much for your speedy and effective solution. As far as I am concerned, you certainly have earned your points today.
