The A540 can't use SDHC memory cards, which is why you can't use the 8GB. HC stands for high capacity, so since your camera only takes normal (or standard) capacity, the biggest card you can put in is a 2 GB. Can't really upgrade it to be able to use the SDHC, and to my knowledge there is no firmware update. Only thing you can do is get a new memory card, or a new camera to support the card.
