Why are some of the pictures I have taken on my canon power shot A540 lost?

I have taken the pictures, reviewed them to make sure they were good, then before I can download them some of the pictures are no longer on my SD card. Can they be recovered or am I doing something wrong?

Sure, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" or "Zero Assumption Recovery" to get back your pictures quite easily. Just do a Google search and you're in business. But afterwards, I'd suggest you toss the card because that's a sure sign of failure.
