Returned from a trip and now cannot turn power on. Help!

Connected camera to computer. Tried to turn power on to upload pictures taken on trip to visit Mom in Florida. Could not get power button to work. Changed batteries. Still no power. Hit it on the side with the USB connection. Still no power. I don't want to have to buy another camera but with a new grandson, I feel I need something quick. Help!

First off, don't hit the camera. That won't help. Check the battery contacts to see if they're smudged or dirty. Clean them with a pencil eraser. Use a USB card reader and transfer the pictures onto your PC with it. Much easier than dealing with connection issues. Lastly, change the batteries. Even though you changed the batteries, they may not be powerful enough. Today's cameras require much more power. Regular daily batteries don't cut it. Alkalines won't even make it unless they have an "mAh" rating of at least 2500. Lastly, you may have condensation inside the camera which is causing power up issues. YOu can always place the camera in a zip lock with a cup of uncooked rice. The rice will act as a desiccant to draw out the moisture in the camera. Lastly, try taking the card out and power it up empty. If it turns on, then I'd say there's a short somewhere.

Outside of these things, and if you can't reset the camera, you may need to send it in for repair.

James how about injecting a car battery into the camera and have cooked rice at the same time?
Dampness more like dumbness :^(
Try the 3.5v dc inlet and if it don't work,it means the little bitty fuse link in the camera is toast. Try to find it--Canon don't want to tell you.
James--stick to cooking rice balls!

Snarky responses are no way to be part of a community, George. And it only reflects poorly on you.

There's that Canadian "humor" again - causes cross cultural difficulties every time.
