Given the age of your camera and the improvements made since then, plus the cost of repairs for these cameras, I would recommend saving your money up and buying a new digital Canon A-series camera. They are both easy and economical to operate on rechargeable AA batteries.
When you get your new camera, immediately install the wrist strap and always put it on your wrist before taking any pictures. There are only a few models of currently available P&S which can withstand a fall from the top of a table to a hard floor and those cameras cost much more.
Another option is to look on ebay for a good used camera, but that is more risky because you don't have any way to know that the camera is in good shape when you bid on it.

Good repair shops are hard to come by. Here is one near Atlanta, GA that was recommended to me though I haven't dealt with them personally.
