My A610 has always worked great but now the LCD will not show anything, in shot mode or playback mode, please help.

My A610 has always worked great but now that I really want to use it for Christmas photos, the LCD will not show anything, in shot mode or playback mode, please help before I lose my Chritmas photo chances.

Hi Sharon,

Can you get the screen to display any of the menu options in shooting or playback mode? If not, it sounds like the screen is probably dead. If the menu options would display, or if the camera showed previously-captured images in playback mode, the problem could be your CCD (imaging sensor), but this sounds more like a LCD failure. If so, you can follow this link to request a repair from Canon, but if your camera is out of warranty it's probably going to cost you more than it's worth to repair it. Might be time to move on to a newer, better model. Sorry, and I hope this helps.

When I turn it on, the Canon emblem appears then auto and a few other icons come on, metering mode, compression, resolution, shooting method,red-eye reduction, flash and auto rotate. The number 347 appears in the right hand bottom corner, I don't recall seeing it before, but it could have been there. When I take a picture it shows a black screen, even downloading it. I have only had it about 7 months. I hope its not something major.

Sharon,

The 347 in the lower right hand corner is the number of shots left to fill the memory card in your camera.

It sounds like the LCD is working, which means that your problem is with the camera's CCD sensor. However, if you only bought the camera 7 months ago, you should still be under the one year limited warranty from Canon. This means that you can most likely send the camera in to them and get it repaired free of charge. You will probably only have to pay for shipping it to them. This isn't a problem you can fix on your own, so I'd recommend requesting the repair as soon as possible. Good luck!

It could be as simple as having hit the "Display" button to the right of the LCD screen. This will cycle the LCD display through "viewfinder only" mode, "viewfinder + settings" and "OFF"! Might be worth a try...

I have the Canon A630 and bought it about a year ago. Last night the same thing happened. LCD screen shows menu icons, but no view, no picture taken since shows up, however shows playback of previously taken pictures. I have read pages and pages of posts on the internet about the 610 and 630 modles having this problem and Canons unwillingness to resolve. Seems Canons products are not built to last very long. Good luck.

The A610 is a lemon. I have one that has the same display problem (displays menu items and old pictures, but won't take new pictures). We sent it to Canon and they wanted $117 to fix it. They would not budge on this. A friend of mine bought the same camera a few days earlier than me, and now he has the same problem. Canon should recall these, but they refuse. Just do a search for "A610 CCD" and you'll see how many other people are having the same problem. I'm never buying anything made by Canon again. I just keep searching for news of a class action suit.
