The usb port on my Canon A610 will not work. What is wrong with the camera?

The camera will not show up on my computer. I've tried connecting the camera to other computers with different usb connectors, but nothing ever pops up showing that the camera is being recognized. I think that something must be wrong with the usb slot on the camera, but I have no idea. What could be wrong here? How would I go about fixing this?

For Canon A610, you need to install the Twain Driver to get it recognized by the computer if you are using Win 2000, Win ME or Win 98SE.

The driver is found in the Windows digital Camera solutions Dsik. Just install the driver without the camera attached. After reboot, you may connect the camera to the computer and see the results.

If in doubt, and you suspect something else could be wrong, plug the camera to a computer runing XP to counter check because XP does not need a driver to recognize A610.

C. Wilson, I also own an A-series Canon and had this identical problem. Called customer service and we narrowed it down (just as you've done); nothing was wrong with the computer or the USB cable, it was indeed a bad USB port on the camera. It wasn't this exact model but was from the same time period, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if yours is the same problem.

If you haven't already, purchase a card reader. They're about 10 bucks, can be hooked up to your computer to read mem cards without having to install software, and save battery wear and tear on your camera.

The USB port can be repaired, but even the Canon guys were telling me that it was a much better deal to just buy a card reader. Card readers average 10-20 dollars, and I didn't ask how much USB repair would cost, but they made it pretty clear that it wasn't worth what it would cost. Having said that, I'm sure if you really wanted it repaired it would be a pretty simple matter of having them pop out the port and install a new one.
