screen blank after power on, no function possible

when I turn the power on, sometimes, the lens comes out but screen remains blank and no operation is possible,can't even switch it off. have to remove batteries. what is the problem?

I have heard of this being a fireware problem. All you might have to do is download an updated version of your current fireware to fix it. You can do that HERE. If this doesn't work I would say servicing is your only route.

I just talked to Canon and they said if you send it in for repairs it will cost no more and no less than $79 plus a $10 service fee plus tax. My camera stopped working after using it in the bathroom with the shower running (hot/humid conditions) which is what was causing the other cameras to stop working due to a wiring connection to the CCD. She also suggested reseting the camera to all factory defaults by: turn camera on > select menu > tools > reset all.
