Camera won't take pictures.

It goes through the motions like everything is working, except the picture is black like there is a lens cover on, which there's not.

That's usually indicative of a failed CCD. I'd first try resetting the camera to see if you can clear it, should the firmware just be corrupted and need to be reloaded. Then, if no joy, I'd get an estimate from Canon. And if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model.
