How does the A650IS compare to the A620?

I love my Powershot A620 but I'd like to increase the MP & zoom. How does this model compare to my old faithful? I read somewhere this model feels less sturdy compared to the A620. That's a big deal to me. I love how heavy & solid my A620 feels and I love the design. This looks pretty similar, but I'd like to know how it REALLY compares. I'm half tempted to stick with my old camera, but I'd like some opinions.

For picture quality, I think there's too much MP here to work with. Let me explain. I came across an interesting article today about how more mega pixels is not necessarily a good thing. According to Image Engineering – a company that does testing of digital cameras for photo magazines in Germany – the quality of digital pictures has steadily decreased since the state of the art was six megapixels back in 2004. And because they don’t have a “dog in this hunt,” they put forth a compelling argument for buying new digital cameras with less mega pixels and not more.

The argument is essentially this: CCD chips on point and shoot cameras a smaller and as such, fitting in more pixels causes them to lose light sensivity. Sure, there’s more data on the chip, but the chip can’t absorb the light data and what it ends up with is a picture that has more noise than image quality. In addition, the more megapixels a camera has, the larger the lens it needs to provide the clarity it deserves and prevent diffraction due to a loss of detail with smaller apertures. But since we’re talking portable point and shoots here, those large lenses simply aren’t being made.

Finally, with larger mega pixels comes longer saving time due to their requires huge storage capacity, or more compression if not storing images in RAW format. The result is a noisier image and a dissatisfied camera user who thirsts for high quality and speed but fell into the trap of "more must mean better."

In the end, relying on a smaller MP that can balance all these needs may indeed be a better answer.

Another thing about the A620 Vs. the A650 is where the sd cards are located. The A650 has the sd card located in the battery compartment and the A620's sd card is on the side of the camera. If you need to take the sd card out of the A650 often, you will spill the 4 batteries if you are in a hurry and not careful. You can use the A620 on a tripod and remove the sd card with the camera on the tripod. With the A650 you have to take the camera off the tripod to remove the sd card. Also, the A620 has the "feel" of a more sturdy, balanced camera. The 650 feels less solid and cheap. Another thing is my A620's lcd picture is a lot more clear than the A650's when trying to focus for a shot. Since I just recently received the A650, I've not yet decided if this is a faulty camera, or if it's the norm.
