Hey there!

The Canon A70 is a notorious camera. It's plagued with CCD problems and angered so many people that Canon was forced to offer free repairs.

You can find information about getting a free repair from Canon here.

I have bitter experience with the CANON A70. Many times the screen goes blank and when it works pictures are not normal colours. The service centre has taken back my camera and told that CANON has decided to replace free the camera worldwide with CANON A530 or A540 which is not known. If somebody could clarify this (which model)it will greatly help.

Ann - Can you help me out. I'm having problems with my camera. Yesterday it worked - today all I get is streaks of white or purple/pink across the lcd and the pix are the same. On play back I can see the pix I took yesterday, but then only these goofy black with light streaks on them now. Batteries are fully charged. What was your problem and what did Canon say?

My Canon Powershot A70 had the same symptoms - only horizontal streaks of color were visible on the LCD & that is all that would show up on the memory card. I called Canon & we ran through some brief diagnostics. Reset the camera to the default settings, turned it on & off a few times, verified that the menu icons were visible & that previously taken images were visible. Still saw the horizontal streaks of color. The rep on the phone felt there was a strong possibility that my camera had the faulty image sensor, so Canon sent me a prepaid UPS shipping label.

A few days after I sent my camera in, I received an e-mailed repair estimate for $ 97.53. No details were listed, so I called the 800#. After going through 5 people, I determined that yes, a technician had looked at my camera & gone through some sort of checklist to determine if it had a faulty CCD sensor, which one person admitted could be an intermittent problem. Apparently, my camera did not have this issue. However, technicians do not take phone calls, so I could not talk with anyone who had actually looked at my camera. Nor was it noted anywhere what they had seen when they powered up the camera. All anyone could tell me was that it must not have the faulty CCD image sensor and if I wanted it fixed it would cost me $97.

I am not likely to purchase from Canon again.

I have had this camera for a couple years and its worth every penny. However a few months ago it exibited the "Pink CCD" issue. I thought it was garbage and then just today stumbled on a canon notice saying they would repair the camera free of charge regardless of warentee status (which honestly is kinda amazing these days). The notice is here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=221&modelid=8776

I just called them, told them what was going on, and they said they would email me the shiping label to ship it back to them. My last two cameras and last camcorder have all been Canons, they simple have the best bang for your buck and after this it seems the best customer support also. Good luck to the others.
