My Canon camera is turning on,but it stays on for about ten seconds and the shuts off again.

Somtimes when i press the "flash" button though it goes to a black screen for another ten seconds and once again it shuts off. When it turns on for that ten seconds when i first turn it one it says canon on a blue backround , but it wont go any farther

Let's start with potential battery problems. Given the age of your camera, I wonder how old are the batteries? NiMH rechargeable batteries are typically used for 2 or 3 years and then must be replaced with a whole new set in order to maintain proper voltage and current capabilities.
