Cannon A-70. Relative to the faulty CCD alert would this cause the camera to loose the ability to focus? I can't focus in automatic or manual.

Absolutely. The CCD is what gathers the light image and converts it to the electronic spectrum. Though the lens may be properly adjusted for focus, if you have a faulty CCD chip, it can easily knock that out of whack.

Hello James,

Thank you for your response. It's funny that the service advisor at Cannon made no mention of this problem.

I bought my camera in 2003. I wonder if Cannon will honor a free CCD replacement for mine?

You may have to lobby a bit. Search the website and see if there's a recall or anything. THen write a letter to the President of Canon. That's right, the President. His secretary will read it and you'll get a response by some VP who will take it from there. Good luck.

I notice that the CCD does have a fault and will be replaced for free - oh, yeah - for the US ONLY!!! Well to my mind they have acknowleged a fault so even the UK custoemrs should receive free repairs. I have a friend who has exactly this fault and I`ll tell them to contact Canon citing the US policy of free repair.

I am happy to report that Cannon accepted full responsibility for the camera and even paid USP shipping to and from.

The camera is now working just fine.

Thanks everyone for the heads up on this question....

Ralph

I live in Canada and have the same problem. All canon is willing to do for me, is having me send it out and pay for the shipping myself, and then they're giving me a free estimate and that's it. Is there any other way for me to get it fixed, or do I have to go through Canon?
