Hi. I am confused between Panasonic Lumix TZ3 & Canon A710 IS. The former dosn't have optical viewfinder but is it a must when shooting in sunshine?

Hi Anil,
It isn't a must, but some people really like it, especially those who are very used to film cameras and thus used to the viewfinder way of shooting. It is a really nice option to have, but you can survive without it. And the LCD of any cam will wash out somewhat in sunlight. I don't own any digitals with optical viewfinders, and I have in the past taped a piece of cardboard in a sort-of dome shape over the top of the camera to prevent LCD wash-out in sun. It's pretty ghetto, but it works.

quite honestly, (I have four digitals w/viewfinders) --- the viewfinders made in the last ten years are not Leica-quality. The views in these modern viewfinders vary significantly from what will show up on the photographs.

However, the viewfinders are still helpful in the bright sun. At least you will be able to follow a running dog or child, or at least get the group of people in the center of the photo. The thing is, you have to allow extra space around the photo (to ensure that you haven't cut something off) ---and then just crop the photo later if needed with an editor.

The A710 is has a viewfinder. This is a plus over the non viewfinder panasonic DMC TZ-3-- NOT a big plus.. The TZ -3 with a 3 inch LCD read out , there just isn't any room for a viewfinder. The 21/2 inch LCD read out on the A710is, is nice,but the 3" screen on the TZ-3 is magnificent.. Delkin makes a rear protector for LCDs that have a 3 fold usefulness.. It is flip up and sells for $20.00 direct from Delkin devices., phone 1 800 637 8087 to order., or Ritz camera and Porter camera companys sell them also.. With the over the LCD shade in place , it is easier to see LCD panel in bright conditions--protects your LCD screen w/ a overlay screen protector,can be easily detached and reatached , by sliding off the pop up hood- you still have the protective coating in place w/ or w/o the hood -- especially recommended for larger LCD screens as they are more suseptable to scratches.. a really useful accessory, that does what it is supposed to .. hal5141

Anil... don't even use the inclusion/lack of an optical viewfinder as a factor for buying a camera.
