Try taking out the batteries to the camera, leaving them out for 5 minutes, then putting them back in. This is a process called power cycling and could be the answer to your problem. The other thing that is probably wrong is that for some reason the max zoom button is pushed and held down, so try jiggling the zoom switch, or pushing down really hard on the zoom in button. If not, you might have to take the camera to a repair shop where they can apart the camera, remove the cover on the zoom button, and then replace the small black touch sensitive button. This should fix your problem. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Some canned air may also help to work out any dust or debris which may be gumming up the works. Then reset the camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to Canon's website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.
