My A80 has a black lcd and the pics I take are completely black.

I tried to take the pics anyway. The pics were downloaded on my computer as black rectangles. The movie had sound, but a black rectangle for the picture. Any ideas?

Make sure your screen is turned on- there's a little button called Display next to the LCD. I've turned mine off before without realizing it.

Thank you. We did try the display button, but it doesn't change anything. We have searched the instruction manual for any indications of buttons accidentally being pushed. We can't find any.

It might be helpful to do a factory reset just in case. To do this you just hold the Menu button for five seconds. That will reset if there was anything accidentally pushed by restoring all the original settings. If that doesn't work, you may be looking at an image sensor problem, and unfortunately for a camera of this age it may cost more to repair than it would to replace. I feel your pain, as I have the A85 and love it. But try the reset, and if that doesn't work, you may want to call Canon or a local shop for an estimate.

Thank you. I will definitely try both ideas. I love that camera and will be sad to part with you.

Good luck. If you don't have any success, or if you do find out what's wrong, feel free to come back and post again, as someone else may have a similar situation and be able to help with something I haven't thought of.

Check out the Canon website at the attached link:
http://www.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=image-phenomena_notice

There is a problem with Canon cameras which Canon have acknowledged and will repair at no cost. The Notice on their website explains it in more detail. Your problem sounds like the problem they are explaining. I have had a similar problem with an A70 (black photos, no display on the LCD, but everything else worked ok) and had it fixed by Canon at no cost. Call the Canon Service Centre in your area to follow up and they should advise you how to proceed. Good Luck.

Thank you! I called yesterday and they said what you have shared. They are sending the shipping label and forms. They were very nice. I just hope it doesn't take too long!
