Are you holding down the power button for a full second? The A80 has a feature that won't turn on or off unless you hold down the button for an extended time.

Throw it away! My Canon A80 quit for no apparent reason as did a friend's of mine. Camera store dealer quoted a minimum or $170.00 for factory repair plus, plus, plus. Really nice camera but will never buy another Canon product.

See Canon's Site for a product advisory that may be applicable. Suddenly going black or extremely distorted fits the symptoms they list.
