Hi Jesse,

Canon has an active recall on the Powershot A85. You can send your camera in for a repair whether it's under warranty or not, and it will be fixed free of charge. Canon will even pay for your shipping, both ways. You can read the recall notice here, and request a repair here. Good luck!

Know this post is old, but this may help others who have this problem. Ben is right, this sounds like a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info. The first link gives other peoples experience and tips in submitting their cameras for repair under this advisory:

My A 80 has gone crazy and all the photos are showing colour distortion in Violet and red , like a blurred wet print . Other times , no photo and black screen . Took it to Malta agent and told him I knew about the recall , and after much hassle , accepted to take the camera and check it , only after I paid 23 Euro . Awaiting outcome , on a promise of money back , ONLY if no other defects found !!!
Not much of a customer service ...but have to wait and see if he keeps his word ?

I have a Canon Powershot A85, and it stopped working about 3 weeks ago. After reading this website I suspected a CCD fault, so sent it back to Canon in Auckland, New Zealand, who fixed the CCD fault free of charge. I received the camera back in working order this morning. Good on Canon for standing by their product

I bought my canan A85 back in Feb. or March 2005 and so far it has only need repairing once and that was due to my dropping it. (oops) I do have a question regarding the "Video Recorder" setting that the camera offers though.... "Does anyone know if it is possible, and if so how to change it, to change the recording timer to be longer than 3 minutes? I want to set it to basically "Unlimited" and only turn off when I turn it off. Having to listen for the "click" and check it and then click the start recording button again...every few minutes has been so annoying! Any ideas, comments or suggestions would be great!!! Thanks!!!
