Dustproof?

Family member is deploying to Afghanistan. Need a camera that will stand up to the harsh climate.

Well the D10 is designed as an all weather camera, but I would recommend looking at the Olympus SW line. Some models are not only dust proof, but can survive a 5 foot fall and up to 33 feet underwater. They're pretty robust.

Both lines of models are adequate for the intended use, since waterproofing taks care of the dust as well. Maybe the Olympus Tough series is to be recommended here on acount of its slimmer line. Anyway, care should be taken to clean the camera as well as possible before opening it, especially around the watertighting sleeves and cover mechanism so that no dust or sand seeps inside. Also, in dusty conditions never use any kind of grease because it tends to attract particles which can harm the camera insides and also get under the watertighting sleeves and make them inefficient. Clean the camera using the lint-free, breath-humidified tissue before opening any of the ports and you'll be fine.
