Is Canon G10 good for portrait photography?

I photograph people a lot especially groups and wondering if this camera will be suitable for this kind of work. I do use a tripod to minimize vibration. What I want to know is if the basics are good such good exposure, lighting and a tripod, whether I can make enlargements as big as 16x20?
Does anybody have experience with adding the external flash to provide better lighting?

Most people who do serious portrait photography will opt for dSLR as a basic equipment instead of a point and shoot like G10.
This is particularly so if enlargements of 16 x 20 is required.

In your case where you take a lot of group pictures, you will find it even more worthwhile investing in a dSLR .
Price wise, there is actually not much difference between a G10 and the lower end dSLR.
G10, as one of the top P&S camera, sells for around $440, whereas Canon digital rebel XS sells for around $465 and XTi sells for around $500.

Most professional photographers would be using one or more external flash to improve the lighting. For the same reason you will probably find this article on flash photography useful for your work.
