G10/11 appropriate for 3D artwork or which camera?

I'm familiar with the early powershot series (have a G3) which has appeal given my limited camera experience. I've read good reviews for the nikon d40 though the minimum ISO is 200. The G11 looks good but is not out yet for much review.

I need to get strong photos of my fine artwork ceramic sculptures--see my site for examples. I'm planning on using a softbox (have to figure out that too) and other set-up tricks to add dimension, etc., but I need a camera designed primarily for this purpose. My surfaces tend to be subtle with colors softer and warmer. The rebel slr was recommended but I think is beyond my abilities and pricey (I'm writing a grant proposal for this and crossing my fingers).

Well, the beauty of the Rebel XSi (or the Xs, for that matter) is that it can run the gamut from full auto to full manual. Meaning it can grow with you. I agree that a DSLR will work best for your needs since a good 35mm lens will pick up far more detail. But it isn't beyond your abilities at all. In fact, it'll start at the beginning of your abilities and take you on a fine journey. If price is an issue, I'm betting you can pick up an XTi soon for cheaper. Another excellent entry level DSLR.

But the G11 would work okay if you're on a budget.

James, you gave me the confidence to put down that the right camera for my needs was either the Rebel T1i or Nikon D5000 in my grant proposal. Now should I not get the grant.....I may have to stick to my G3 a while longer and keep a lookout for those others you mentioned. Thanks for your reply!
