How can you download video from the G7 to a Mac OS10?

I have the new G7 and when I took a short video clip on it the other night, my MAC OS 10 would not read the video. Plus every time I tried connecting the camera to my computer, IPHOTO kept popping up. When I tried to get Imovie to read the clip, it kept giving me the message that a camera was not connected. Any suggestions? This is very frustrating as my horse just had a newborn foal, and I'd like to get a few short clips of her.

Lynne,

I'm not sure if it works this way on a Mac, but when the camera is connected in Windows, you can use the file browser to manually look at the files on the camera's memory card. If you can do something similar in OS X, you can probably copy the movie file from your camera to the hard drive of your Mac and then open it with iMovie.

Let me know whether this works or not.

Thanks for your reply, Ben, but, no, sorry to say that MACs don't work the same way as your PC in Windows. Once my G7 camera USB connection is made on my MAC, IPHOTO comes up immediately. When I try to take the video clip into IMOVIE, I get a message that says my "camera is not connected." I've been researching this a bit, and it seems that a good number of cameras are not compatible with MAC OS 10. Bummer. If anyone else knows of a solution, please let me know. I've just ordered the ILIFE suite, which will update my IPHOTO 4.0 to 6.0.
Maybe that will help.

Hopefully I don't come off as entirely stupid here, but... once the camera is connected and iPhoto opens, can you minimize it and see if there's a desktop icon for the camera as a browsable removable drive?

If the camera is truly completely incompatible with OS X, the other option is to buy an external USB memory card reader (usually about $10 or less) and use that as a means to get the files. It's a workaround, but a reliable one.

Ben,

I bought a card reader and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the advice. I've now got access to my G7 video, thanks to you.

Hey there Lynne and Ben,
Little late adding a response but am hoping it can help.
You can indeed browse the contents of a memory card using a Mac. The problem in Lynne's case is that pesky iPhoto got in the way when she connected the G7 via USB; this can also be remedied.
In OS X' Application folder lives a little app called Image Capture. Fire this up and go to its preferences. There, under the General tab, you see Camera and a pop-down menu: in Lynne's case it probably indicates iPhoto, Change it to Image Browser and it will start up instead of iPhoto allowing you to download all or some of the cards contents..including videos :)
Image browser can also be used to control cameras such as the G7 remotely and, in a pinch, used with certain scanners.it's a small app but with great capabilities.

Thanks for the informations, Frank. I'll give that a try, although I did go out and buy a card reader and I've been able to access the video that way. Thank you for the reply.

Thank you, Frank. It works for my G10, too! I am so excited to save my video in Mac. I wish Canon manual could mention this information, and they should give you credit.
