My Canon G7 won't power-up.

All of a sudden I can't turn on my Canon G7. I tried removing the battery, changing the battery, removing the memory card... everything. What can I do?

You may want to see if there's any condensation lurking around. If you toss it into a ziplock with some uncooked rice (or those small pocket things that came with it) it'll draw the moisture away from the camera. Leave it in there for a few hours and then give it a whirl.

I'd also try cleaning the battery contacts. Sometimes dirt, dust and other "schmutz" can prevent the batteries from making a good connection. Take out a pencil eraser and give it a few scratches to clean off the contacts. Also, make sure your batteries are well charged and new. Lithium-ion batteries do lose capacity over time and if this camera is over two years old, it may be time to get a new power source.

Outside of that, you may be looking at a service estimate by Canon.

I had the same problem - all of a sudden my G7 wouldn't turn on. I was at a loss and was resigned to a huge repair bill or simply replacing it, until today when I took out the SD card (sandisk 4gb) to use in another camera (Casio Exilim) - and the same thing happened with that one! It wouldn't power up at all - when earlier that day it was working fine with a different SD card. So obviously it was a faulty SD card. Once I'd put a different card into the G7 and put in a fresh battery, it started working again! I am so relieved. Hopefully this might help others.

I had a similar fault. The camera seems to latch itself in the dead state caused by a failed battery which also switches any other (canon) battery 'off'. The solution is to put a fresh battery in, then press the 'play' button on the back instead of the power button. This restarted mine but one of my batteries will shut the camera down again - ready for the re-cycling centre I think. Canon batteries seem to have an internal switch which will latch the battery into a low voltage mode and so not usable until popped into a charge for 1 second to clear the latch/re-settable fuse or whatever wizardry they use.

I have this problem now, I tried all this solutions, but it seems really dead. I brought the camera to the Cannon service and they told me they have to change the entire power module inside - 80 Euro. I am looking around forums to see if this is not a serial problem...

My Canon G7 did exactly the same as above, working fine one moment and then dead as a doornail.
Simply won't power on, despite cleaning contacts, trying a different memory card, trying its spare battery. Canon wants over $100 to even look at it! There is a tiny screw missing on the bottom of the camera; wondering if that has anything to do with the problem.

I seem to have the same problem as Baz.

My G7 failed to turn on one day, and after a check in my pocket, I noticed that one of the bottom screws had fallen out in there. There now is a distinct rattle coming from the camera and it still doesn't want to turn on.

I'm going to have to send it to a Canon repair centre I think, as I'm definitely up to speed with fixing cameras!

Damn MINES failed now, am getting from the little research i have made that perhaps there is a "death" chip in this and probably other certain cameras to either keep the Canon sevice centers in business or to force the consumer to purchase another camera, I absolutley loved mine.

How long have yours lasted before failing to start, if its like 2 years and 1 week there is definately something "amiss" as statistically electronic failures occur well within the first year i.e. DOA then after that at cycles of 10 years on.

Hey there. I had the same problem with my Canon Powershot G7 recently. Check out the following website:

http://www.camerasandparts.com/conoporede.html.

These guys fixed my camera, and it's now working better than it ever has! They only work with Canon's, so they have outstanding expertise and knowledge when it comes to Canon's! For $89 total, they totally fix the issue as well as service the whole camera. Not only did they fix the issue, they have a correction for those internal screws so you never have to worry about it happening again. Return shipping and all parts and labor are included in the cost as well! My experience with them has been total first-class.

You will be so pleased with these guys.... I promise!! Good luck!! :)

Same fault as other users. Working fine. Then went to power up for a shot and nothing. Battery only charged before going out. Tried spare. Exactly the same. Big disappointment. What's the European law that suggests you can expect 6 years of use, not just 12 months the standard warranty gives? serial no. 3031010279
