hello a tube like appliance, the lens adaptor is A MUST to mount auxilliary extender lenses on the G-9-- it can also be used as a sun shade and allows the use of filters over the the lens. Make sure the G -9 is set to CONVERTER mode , before use w/ auxilliay converter lenses. There is a chapter in the g-9 instruction book on this , that is very clear to the parts numbers needed. You can pull up the g-9 instruction book under the Canon.USA web site. Using auxiliary entender lenses compramizes the ability of the intregrel lens some what, but it can increase and streach telephoto and wide angle capability with decent reults - practice in using these appendages will help your expertise in their use. -- hal5141
