Great first camera or backup

( - 1/3/05) Feature rich, pocketable (in coat or photographer's vest), good quality photos, controls well laid out, video almost camcorder quality. Only beef is, I just bought the thing a month ago, and most reviews and Canon tech support say it is FAT32 compatible and thus can handle CF cards > 2gb so I bought a 4gb SanDisk UltraII and the camera says 1.9gb available when I try to format the card. Do I already need a software update? Since the card is not returnable, I'll be very pissed if the camera cannot handle it.
