Tom,
You're going to want to set the camera on shutter dependent to experiment with this. The long exposures is the correct approach, but your aperture might have been left open too long. You'll also want to set the camera down to ISO 50 to reduce the light intensity. You'll also want to make sure the aperature is at its minimum for the camera (f/4.0). Unfortunately, that isn't that tight, so your camera might not work the best for this. For longer exposures in daylight, you'll need an aperture that goes smaller than f/10.
