Let's check the basics first -- batteries well charged AND connections cleaned with a pencil eraser.
Total camera reset is next. Look under menu in tools or read the manual to find this. Sometimes reset can be accomplished by removing the batteries for several minutes and replacing them.
Next make certain it is not in macro mode and the focus lock is OFF.
Now try center area auto focus and then 1 point auto focus.
Last see if the Manual Focus will work.
If this doesn't solve it I would have to recommend a trip to the shop or call to Canon tech support.
