Nothing happens when connected to computer by USB cable

Always before when I connected my cam to my comp, it would automatically open up a window, but now, nothing at all happens. My daughter was the last one to upload photos and she said, "uploaded as usual, maybe shut down comp before pushing off button on cam or disconnecting cable, maybe batteries were dead" in answer to my question of what was different than all the times before that we've uploaded photos.

Osmia,

Have you tried using a different USB port? I've seen those go bad before. I would also restart without your camera or the USB cable plugged in, and then start over.

Yup, that was the 2nd thing I tried, after trying all possible combinations of cable connected/disconnected and cam on/off variations, which I then repeated with the 2nd USB port and checked both ports with my mouse and both are working.

You might have a bad USB cable then. You can either replace it or pick up a SD Memory Card reader. They aren't that expensive, and you might find it works better as well as saves your camera battery.

Hmmmmm, I guess that could be it ... and I have no way of checking this particular cable, because it's the only one I have and my cam is the only one I have, so it's not like I can just swap it to another cam to check ... annnnnd the worst thing about it, is, if you are correct, there is no possible way I can rectify this before next week-end :(, and I was planning to get pics currently on my cam, uploaded and posted today! If I haven't found an alternative solution by this up-coming week-end, I guess I'll go with your suggestion and head into town to buy a card-reader ... but I'm reallllly hopin' that some other workable solution will present itself before then *fingers crossed*

It may also be that your OS has shut down the port as a power saving feature. Check that out. But I agree with Andrew that a USB Memory card reader will cure a multitude of ails in this regard.
